Host Kimberly Gayle introduces the Emergence Loop — a storytelling framework for building your audience, community, and business by opening a public loop before you know how your story ends. This episode makes the case for a specific kind of certainty (knowing your foundation) while releasing you from a different kind (needing the outcome before you’re allowed to share).
Episode Highlights
Two Kinds of “Not Ready” There’s a real reason to wait — not knowing your foundation yet, your values, your story, what makes you different. That work always comes first. But there’s a trap version too: knowing your foundation and still waiting for the proof, the win, the finished result before you let anyone watch. Kimberly names the difference and gives listeners permission to release the second one.
What “Opening a Loop” Actually Means Long before it was a branding framework, opening a loop was a storytelling device — introducing an unresolved question, mystery, or tension that makes an audience eager to keep watching. Kimberly breaks down why the human brain can’t let unfinished business go, and why every one of the five loops in this episode is just a different flavor of the same ancient technique.
The Psychology Behind Why It Works
- The Zeigarnik Effect — unfinished things get remembered and fixated on far more than finished ones
- Anticipation over arrival — dopamine fires on the “getting there,” not the reward itself
- Neural coupling — Princeton research (Dr. Uri Hasson) showing a listener’s brain activity syncs with a storyteller’s, which is the real explanation behind “I feel like I already know you”
The Five Loops (with real examples to watch):
- Destination Loop — a known, nameable endpoint. Kelsey Pfendler (@yourowkelsey) rowed solo from Monterey, California to Honolulu, Hawaii — 2,400+ miles, documented in near-real-time, becoming the first American woman and fastest person of any gender to complete the crossing.
- Project Loop — a visible build in progress. Jessi Jean (@jessijeanhome) grew her early following by documenting furniture flips and home projects, mess and all, before she had any teaching platform.
- Unfolding Loop — a felt pull without a defined plan. Harriet Fisher (@theharrietfisher) lost her job and started publicly interviewing strangers about their jobs and dreams, discovering her direction through the act of doing it publicly. Kimberly shares her own version of this loop — leaving her corporate career with a “no going back” stake and no roadmap, long before ABVGirl or Final Draft Taphouse existed.
- Goal Loop — a specific, stated outcome with a real number and deadline. Jennifer Herrera (@jenniferherrerastudio) of Heal Your Part is running “Road to 50K,” pulling one act of healing from a jar every day and sharing it publicly until she hits 50,000 followers — she’s at 912 right now.
- Challenge Loop — a defined container with a start, end, and rules. Ellen Mote (@ellenmote) is six weeks into her self-imposed “Side Quest Summer,” and Chandler Bolt (@realchandlerbolt) is running a public “Dream 100” outreach challenge day by day on Instagram.
The Payoff Kimberly ties the mechanism directly to results: the Zeigarnik gap grows your audience, neural coupling builds your community, and an audience invested in your outcome becomes warmer leads for your business. Same loop, four outcomes.
This Week’s Challenge: Open Your Loop
- Get clear on your loop, not your certainty — which of the five is honestly true to where you are right now?
- Name your stake out loud — one specific sentence, public enough that it could be publicly missed.
- Start your series — commit to this as an ongoing story, not a one-off post.
- Share it publicly on Instagram this week, and tag it as the start of a series.
- Keep the loop open — post the messy middle, not just the wins.
This Week’s Mantra: “I don’t need certainty to start. I need a stake. The becoming is the content, and I’m brave enough to let it be seen.”
