“Your personal account and your business account aren’t competing for the same content. They’re serving two different — but connected — jobs. And once you understand why, the fog clears fast.”
If you’re a solopreneur or small business owner whose brand is inseparable from you, the question of what goes on your personal Instagram versus your business Instagram is one of the most confusing — and most common — questions in personal branding. In this episode, Kimberly Gayle breaks it all the way down so you can stop second-guessing every post and start showing up with clarity and intention.
Episode Highlights
The Two-Account Problem
Most entrepreneurs either cram everything onto one account or keep their personal account so “professional” that nobody gets to know them — and neither approach works. Kimberly names the real cost of both and explains why the fix isn’t posting more, it’s posting smarter.
What Lives on Your Personal Account
Your character, values, story, lifestyle (filtered through your brand), and — this is the piece most people miss — your thought leadership pillar. Not generic content. The specific topic your business is the SOLUTION for. For Kimberly, that’s personal branding. For her music therapist client, it’s music as therapy. For her agritourism client, it’s why farms and agritourism matter for land and community.
What Lives on Your Business Account
Your mission and vision, offers, funnel and CTAs, testimonials and social proof, employee and partner features, behind-the-scenes content, and educational content that speaks to your ideal client’s problem and its root cause. Your customer journey should be clearly mapped in your pinned posts and highlights.
When Content Lives on Both
Launches, client wins, and milestones can live on both accounts — but from two distinct angles. Your business account shares the brand moment. Your personal account shares the founder moment. The test: can this content be told authentically from both your personal angle AND your brand’s angle without forcing it? If yes — post it both places.
Kimberly’s Real-Time Example
Kimberly shares exactly how she’s currently thinking about her own personal account (three buckets: About Me, Living Boldly, and Starting Over at 48) versus her Bold Emergence Branding account (founder story, mission/vision/values, thought leadership organized around Uncovering, Emergence, and Building Presence). Even Polly’s favorite podcast host is figuring this out in real time.
One Account or Two? It Depends.
The two-account strategy isn’t the only strategy. If your name IS your brand (think Jennifer Langley and Jennifer Langley Consulting), one account can work beautifully. The right structure depends on how distinct your personal name is from your business name — and how you plan to grow long term.
Client Spotlight: Agritourism Expert in the Making
Kimberly shares the strategy she’s building for a current client — a six-year agritourism business owner who is building her personal brand under her own name to become THE agritourism expert. Her personal account will anchor in the thought leadership pillar of agritourism (including her own story of saving her farm through a pizza farm experience), while her business account stays focused on her specific agritourism operation. Her business becomes the living proof for her personal brand.
This Week’s Challenge: The Content Split Chart
- Draw three columns: Personal Account, Business Account, and Both.
- Under Personal: your story/journey, values, lifestyle (filtered through your brand), and your ONE thought leadership pillar topic.
- Under Business: mission and vision, offers, funnel/CTA, social proof, employee/partner features, BTS content, and educational content on your ideal client’s problem and its cause.
- Under Both: anything that can be told authentically from your personal angle AND your brand’s angle — launches, client wins, milestones.
- Share your chart on Instagram Stories and tag @boldemergencebranding!
This Week’s Mantra: “I don’t need it perfectly figured out to start showing up with clarity.”
Key Takeaway
Your personal account and your business account each have a job to do. When you’re clear on what those jobs are, you stop second-guessing every post — and you start building a presence that pulls people toward you on both fronts. You don’t need it perfectly figured out. You just need to start.
